[USA] Humane Studies Fellowship at George Mason University

The Institute for Humane Studies Scholarships of up to $12,000 are awarded to undergraduate or graduates to study in the United States or abroad.

About 120 scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate, graduate, law, and professional students who are exploring the principles, practices, and institutions necessary to a free society through their academic work.

Each year IHS award scholarships to students from universities around the globe and sponsors the attendance of hundreds of students at its summer seminars and other educational programs.

All qualified men and females will be thought about for Humane Studies Fellowships without regard to race, religion, national or ethnic origin, citizenship, or handicap.

Although IHS considers applications from outside the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, fellowships are usually awarded to candidates who live, or are studying, in those countries.

Application deadline: December 31.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who is eligible for the Humane Studies Fellowships?

The following individuals are eligible for the Humane Studies Fellowships:

* Individuals who will be undergraduate juniors or seniors in the work of the academic year of funding

* Graduate students in any field

* Law students, MBA students, and other professional students

Note: Students pursuing MFA degrees are not eligible for the Humane Studies Fellowship. MFA students ought to apply for the IHS Film & Fiction Scholarship.

Fellowship awards can be used to study in any country.

Country of origin and country of study have no bearing on eligibility.

In order to get Fellowship awards, winners must be full-time, enrolled students at accredited degree-granting institutions for the whole period of the award. For the purposes of the Fellowship, ‘full-time’ is defined as an applicant’s home institution defines it.

Humane Studies Fellowships are awarded for one year. Winners are eligible to reapply in later years. There is no limit on how lots of awards an individual may get.

How am I able to apply for the Humane Studies Fellowship?

Applications are accepted online only. The net application can be found here. Paper copies of the application are not available.

What forms, documents, and essays are necessary to apply?

Necessary information is listed below and can be submitted through the net application.

1. A done online application

2. Essay A– A 500–1,000 word essay describing your intellectual development and future designs. The essay ought to address your interest in the intellectual and institutional foundations of a free society, the way you expect to contribute to a better understanding of these foundations, and your career goals, with an emphasis on where you expect to be in three, 10, and 20 years.

3. Essay B– A 1,000–2,000 word essay discussing a research paper, dissertation or other intellectual project you are either working on now or recently done. The essay ought to address how this project supports your larger research and career goals, criticisms you faced or are likely to face and the way you responded or plan to reply to them, and any the way you handled any other difficulties you encountered .

4. The names and e mail addresses of one (and not over four) individuals who will write letters of recommendation on your behalf

5. A brief description of your current research interests

6. A writing sample of not over 30 pages

7. Your most recent university transcript; unofficial transcripts are acceptable

8. Score reports for your most recent standardized test; unofficial reports are acceptable

Note: in case you have never been necessary to take the GRE, LSAT, GMAT, SAT, or ACT, you are not necessary to take it for the purposes of the Fellowship. Basically note you were never necessary to take these tests.

What is necessary of earlier Humane Studies Fellowship winners?

1. A done online application

What score reports are necessary for the Fellowship application?

The score reports for your most recent standardized admissions check (GRE, LSAT, GMAT, SAT or ACT) is necessary as part of the application. In case you have never been necessary to take an admissions check, you are not necessary to take the check to apply for the Humane Studies Fellowship.

An official score document is not necessary. A scanned copy of the score document is , and can be uploaded as a PDF file in the net application. To convert your document in to a PDF file, try the Adobe.com offer of three free PDF conversions per month.

In case you are unable to locate a replica of your scores, official score reports can be obtained from the following agencies:

GRE: www.gre.org; score reports cost $15. The IHS code for ETS is 0066.

SAT: www.sat.org; score reports cost $6.50. The IHS code for College Board is 0066.

LSAT: www.lsat.org; score reports cost $35. The IHS code for LSAC is 0066.

GMAT: www.mba.com

ACT: www.act.org. The IHS code for the ACT is 7000.

What if my score document is no longer available from the testing service?

An official score document is not necessary. Your department or university may have a replica of your score document on file. A replica of the score document from your personal files is also acceptable.

What transcripts are necessary for the Fellowship application?

They need your most recent university transcript. In case you are in the first year of a graduate program and do not have a transcript for your current university, send your undergraduate transcripts. Official transcripts are not necessary.

My college or university does not issue transcripts. What do I do?

send other appropriate documentation that rates the quality of your academic work.

I cannot get transcripts from my university. Am I still eligible?

In case you cannot get transcripts, you stay eligible. However, failure to submit documents limits our ability to thoroughly evaluate your application, and may affect your chances of being named a Fellow.

What is necessary for the letters of recommendation?

They need the names and e mail addresses of one (2) and not over four (3) individuals who will write letters of recommendation on your behalf. Your recommenders ought to be able to comment on your intellectual and scholarly ability, your chance of success in your selected career path, and your ability to contribute to the understanding of the principles, practices and institutions necessary to a free society.

IHS will contact your recommenders soon after you submit your application, and they will ask them to send the letters directly to us by January 19, 2010.

Can letters of recommendation be sent separately to IHS?

Yes. If your recommenders need to send their letters before they contact them, they may do so either by e mail or by surface mail.

Can your technique send out letters of recommendation before the deadline?

No, the technique will send out requests for letters of recommendation only after you have submitted your application. The deadline for recommenders to submit their letters is January 19, 2010.

Can my recommender send in the letter by US Mail?

No, they greatly prefer that your recommender send the letter by e mail.

Do all Fellows get $12,000?

No. IHS makes Fellowship awards from $2,000 to $12,000. To decide the size of an award, they think about the cost of tuition at a student’s institution and other money the student may get.

How lots of Fellowships are awarded each year?

The number of Fellowships awarded in a year varies according to the strength of the applicant pool. In recent years, they have awarded between 110 and 160 Fellowships.

How will I do know that my application is complete?

They will send you an e mail indicating your application is complete. If anything is missing, they will contact you directly to request the missing documents.

I do not have all necessary documents and information for the application. May I still apply?

Yes. However, failure to submit documents limits our ability to thoroughly evaluate your application, and may affect your chances of being named a Fellow.

If I win a Fellowship, will it automatically be renewed each year?

Fellowships are awarded through a competitive method each year. Earlier winners must reapply in order to be thought about.

May Humane Studies Fellowships be used to study abroad?

Yes. Fellowships may be used for study at degree-granting institutions anywhere in the world.

When is the deadline to apply for the Fellowship?

The deadline to apply for the 2010-11 Fellowships is December 31, 2009.

Will materials that are postmarked after December 31, such as check scores or transcripts, be thought about?

They won’t accept any supporting documents, such as transcripts, score verifications or writing samples postmarked or emailed after January 22. endeavor to make your application complete before this date.

When will decisions be announced?

Decisions will be announced in one stages. In March, you will get an update announcing whether you are a finalist under consideration. In early May, they will announce final decisions.

Can my Fellowship award be deferred?

No. Fellowship awards cannot be deferred. Only individuals who are enrolled full-time for the whole period of the award can collect the award. Those who do not enroll in a university for the period of the Fellowship forfeit the award.

I am Mathews Emmanuel Chirwa, a Malawian by nationality. I am a civil servant and a holder of a Dilpoma in Fishing Gear Technology obtained from the University of Humberside (UK). I have participated in the fisheries research activities with both the fisheries department and the fishing gear experts mainly from Europe in different projects. Currently I assist in teaching pre-service students at Malawi College of Fisheries.

My ambitions are that to become an individual who can plan and implement a fisheries research programme for the offshore deep water fishery in our lake, Lake Malawi. To become an individual who can be reliable in inputing to the college curruculum as we now accreditted by the University of Malawi and in future there are those chances that it may become a fully flgged university. Fishing gear technology is such one of those important subjects as the country’s priorities is to sustainably utilise the fisheries resources hence need to design new fishing gears or improve on the existing hence need for more knowledge and skills.
