[UK] Research Fellowships for Women in Newnham College

Posted by: In: Fellowship|Scholarships in Europe

The purpose of Junior Research Fellowships is to allow highly-talented women* to pursue their research single-mindedly in a supportive academic environment. Fellowships are normally awarded to women just finishing their PhDs, or those in their first post-doctoral appointment.

We normally elect two women to Junior Research Fellowships each year, one each in the Sciences (including Mathematics and Engineering) and in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Research Fellows are appointed for a period of three years, although many leave sooner if they are successful in gaining faculty appointments in Cambridge or elsewhere. Both selection panels use the concept of “research age” in judging how long a candidate has been active in research, so that time out of research for professional or family reasons will not be a disadvantage.

The Humanities and Social Sciences Fellowship subjects are offered on a three-year rotation.
2010/11: History, Architecture and History of Art, Oriental Studies, Divinity

2011/12: Classics, Archaeology and Anthropology, Modern and Medieval Languages, Philosophy, Geography, History and Philosophy of Science

2012/13: Politics, Psychology, Sociology and International Studies (PPSIS), Economics, English, Education, Business and Management, Land Economy, Music, Law

The Sciences Fellowship is offered in any field of Science, Mathematics or Engineering.

During their tenure, JRFs have no duties other than to pursue their research, but they may if they wish participate in College teaching. They are members of the College Governing Body, and may serve on other College committees.
The Fellowships carry a competitive stipend, plus accommodation in a college set or flat. An additional allowance is payable if the holder chooses to live in non-College accommodation. Fellowships may also be awarded on a non-stipendiary basis to women who hold another post-doctoral appointment in the University or in a recognised Non-University Institution (NUI).  Funds are available to support research costs, such as conference travel: all Research Fellows are also entitled to a one-off sum of up to £10k towards the cost of a research project, or towards running a Newnham-based research event (such as a conference or workshop).

We are currently seeking applications for the 2010/11 Research Fellowships. Applications for the Humanities and Social Sciences Fellowship close on 5th November 2010 and for the Sciences Fellowship on 19th November 2010.

Dear Madam /sir,
My name is Zahra Nasir Talib.I am a lecturer at the Department of English , College of Arts, University of Basrah.I have been lecturing at the Department of English and Language Centre since 1998.I got my M.A. degree in Applied Linguistics at the university of Basrah in 1998.My M.A. thesis was entitled ‘Pragmalinguistic failure in Translation:A Pedagogically-Oriented Study”.I have three published papers. They are as follows:
1-’The Translation of Interjections:A case Study of Al-Baalebeki’s Translation of Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities’ in Adab Al-Basrah Journal
2-’An Analysis of the Illocutionary acts used in the Compositions written by first- and Fourth-Year Students of the Department of English of the College of Arts in Basrah University’ in The Arab Gulf Journal
3- ‘The Meanings of Interjections in English and Arabic’ in Adab Al-Basrah Journal
I received my Ph. D in General Linguistics at the University of Basrah in 2006.The title of my dissertation is ‘A Pragmatic Study of Text Politeness in Arabic’. The study explores the politeness strategies used by Arab writers. It aims at analyzing the linguistic devices the y use to minimize the negative effect of their illocutionary acts of criticizing and disagreeing.
I would be grateful to you if you choose me to get one of your visiting research fellowships to work on a research project dealing with a pragmatic analysis of linguistic politeness in Islamic texts(such as the Qur’anic verses and the prophetic tradition) in order to arrive at the applicability of politeness strategies used in such texts to modern Arabic. In fact, such a study is of use to learners of Arabic since it explores Arabic language from a pragmatic perspective. Linguistic politeness shows us that truth is no longer equal to harsh words but it can be agreeable to the ear and soothing to the heart.
If the subject is not of your interest, please refer me to the Department that is concerned with it.
Thank you
Yours sincerely
Dr. Zahraa Nasir Talib Al-Musawy
