The PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) aims at preparing researchers with the capacity to perform autonomous research activities and the ability to lead innovation processes in the scientific area of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in both academic and enterprise environments.
This third cycle complements the engineering education of the candidates through advanced studies and research and development in emergent knowledge areas. After finishing this cycle, the candidates will be able to lead, with scientific rigor and supported by updated methodological and technological knowledge, processes of analysis, design, modeling, production and operation of advanced and innovative systems in the domain of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

The research project deals with an intelligent measurement system, a part of Intelligent Vision Agent System, which gathers data in order to reconstruct 3D information. The project focuses on development, design and implementation of a high-performance autonomous distributed information system. The results can be applies in many fields especially for health and medical care, security and surveillance, but even for control. The project covers several engineering subjects such as measurement and instrumentation, sensoring, signal and image processing, and vision system. The research methods are based on theoretical modeling, simulation and particularly physical experiments.

The Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) is a new interdisciplinary institute with the mission to carry out internationally outstanding research on the interactions of biodiversity and climate change on the organism level. It has been founded by the Senckenberg Gesellschaft fuer Naturforschung, the Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, and others partners. The Centre is funded by the Federal State of Hesse through its Initiative for the Development of Scientific and Economic Excellence (LOEWE). It provides a new, dynamic research environment that integrates a variety of disciplines from both natural and social sciences. The Project Area A “Evolution and Climate” invites applications for the position of a

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship on the study and development of a robot operating in a smart home. This project is part of a wider programme to develop intelligent environment technologies. An intelligent environment is fitted with sensors to monitor and infer activity within the home. A mobile robot can help by monitoring from different viewpoints and at close range. The robot can be directed to the location of the activity to collect further evidence of activity detected by the network of fixed sensors. Similarly, the robot can investigate suspected sensor failure to provide autonomicity and act as a temporary sensor to re-establish a full operating intelligent environment. The introduction of the robot will permit activities to be disambiguated and help enhance activity analysis.

Adaptive optics (AO) is used in large telescopes to compensate for disturbances in the atmosphere as well as vibrations of the telescope’s optical components. With the increasing dimensions of telescopes, up to 42m for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), the dimensions of the AO systems are increasing such that the computational complexity of the controller prohibits an (unstructured) centralised implementation.
