The Scholarship

PhD Student (Physics, Applied Mathematics, Simulation Science or Computer Science)

Inverse Modeling and Tomography in Atmospheric Remote Sensing

Ref.  D070/2010

With 4400 staff members Forschungszentrum Jülich is the largest interdisciplinary research centre in Germany focusing its research in the fields of health, environment and energy, and information technology.

For a research project at the Institute of Chemistry and Dynamics of the Geosphere – Stratosphere (ICG-1), we are seeking a Ph.D. student to join our team working on improving new methodology and algorithms for remote sensing measurements. The intention is to identify trace species, temperatures, and cloud properties in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere.

The Institute of Plant, Animal and Agroecosystem Sciences at ETH Zurich, Chair of Grassland Sciences (Prof. Nina Buchmann), seeks a Ph.D. student in Ecology

Responsibilities
Research within the SNF project Forest ecosystem responses to climatic drivers with focus on CO2 and H2O vapor fluxes of two managed forests in Switzerland. Net ecosystem gas exchange between biosphere and atmosphere will be measured using eddy-covariance. Growth performance will be assessed using pointdendrometers. Tasks include maintenance of two established flux towers, design and maintenance of additional field experiments, sample preparation and analyses, data acquisition, analysis and interpretation, presentation of results nationally and internationally.

The Master Course ‘Global Studies – A European perspective’ is an interdisciplinary, research-based Master offered by a consortium of five European universities:
The European Commission is supporting this Master Course with a generous grant scheme for non-European students and a mobility scheme which links the consortium to six non-European partners:

The Department of Applied Mechanics conducts research in the areas of vehicle design and mechanical engineering. The research is often carried out together with national and international academic and industrial partners, and it concerns both fundamental and applied problems.

The research at the Division of Dynamics at the Department of Applied Mechanics is directed towards various dynamic, vibration and wave propagation problems, also with coupling to other physical phenomena such as wear or piezoelectricity. Both fundamental and applied research is performed, and although the main thrust is towards modelling and numerical treatment, experimental activities also play an important role. A large part of the applied research is performed within the competence centre CHARMEC (CHAlmers Railway MEChanics), see www.chalmers.se/charmec.

The division has a large teaching involvement giving basic courses in mechanics and strength of materials and advanced courses in mechanics, FEM, structural dynamics, and optimization of dynamical systems.

The PhD program of the Paris School of Neuroscience provides an outstanding multidisciplinary curriculum to students through seminar series, lab rotations, and research training in top neuroscience laboratories of the Paris region. The faculty includes internationally recognized experts across the large field of the neurosciences from basic molecular and cellular studies, computational science to brain imaging and clinical research.

The program involves rotations in different ENP labs during the first year followed by three years of research in one ENP laboratory towards a PhD. Students design their own programs leading to the PhD with oversight by faculty committees ensuring appropriate depth and breadth of training.

An unsolved key question in condensed matter physics concerns the understanding of why and how materials go from fluid to disorded dynamically arrested states, so called glasses? Any liquid that is cooled fast enough to avoid the ordered crystalline state will form a glass which has a molecular structure almost identical to that of the liquid. Why the molecular motions in the liquid slow down so dramatically upon cooling is not well understood and glass formation thus remains an unsolved mystery of solid and soft condensed matter physics.

Materials that undergo transitions from fluid to disordered solid states are common and important both in nature and in man-made materials. Examples of such materials include gels, colloidal suspensions, granular systems, emulsions, foams, pastes and even biological cells. Despite the widely different nature of these materials, the transitions often show strong similarities, in turn suggesting a common physical description. The work involved in this position will adress some of the key open questions.
