Job Description: The objective of the research is the development of novel methods for self-organized control and coordination of heterogeneous teams of humans and robot swarms interacting in symbiotic peer-to-peer modality. The applicant will devise novel ways to include humans’ unique sensory-motor and cognitive skills in the loop of robotic swarms. The applicant will investigate different means and combinations of multi-modal communications based on visual cues, human gestures, vocal commands, stigmergic signalling, and radio messages. Particular attention will be also devoted to the modelling of human and swarm emotions and to the study of how to use them to effectively affect motivations, goals, action selection, and learning.

The Graduate Training Centre of Neuroscience is the first international neuroscience Graduate School was established at the University of Tübingen in 1999. In the future, three Schools will provide research oriented career tracks – leading to a master or doctoral degree – that provide an ideal preparation for a career in science and academia. The three graduate programs will complement one another at best and, thus, provide a markedly broad sprectrum of neuroscience research and training opportunities in Tübingen. Teaching is entirely in English.

The project focuses on determination of the mechanism of action of newly identified anti-mitotic siRNA and miRNA molecules. In the project we utilise versatile molecular biology methods and cell imaging techniques.
We are searching for a young scientist who has a recent M.Sc diploma, strong motivation for Ph.D work and practical experience from the field of cell / cancer biology. The position is first for one year with good possibilities for a long extension period.

There are 2 main competitive scholarship schemes for PhD students in Physiology available to all nationalities (in both cases application is made via the Department of Physiology):
- Department of Physiology PhD Scholarships: For PhD students in Physiology only. We will fund at least 2 students to commence their PhD in 2011. Financial support is available and includes stipend ($20,000 per year), fees, conference and research expenses.
- University of Otago Scholarships for Domestic and International Students: For PhD students in all disciplines. Financial support is as above although there are a number of $25,000 per annum scholarships for applicants of outstanding academic calibre.
