The fruit processing industry is experiencing a surge in its growth with Quebec ranked tenth in North The united states. The growth has generated immense quantities of “fruit pomace” as solid waste (25–30% of the total processed fruits) obtained after the extraction of fruit juice. The aim is to carryover out value-addition of pomace to produce ligninolytic enzymes; extract polyphenols; & use the fermented mass as animal feed by using a white rot fungus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium.

The fruit pomace residues are usually rich in carbohydrates, cell wall polysaccharides & other functionally important bioactive molecules, such as proteins, minerals & natural antioxidants. Owing to the high carbohydrate content, fruit pomace can be used as a substrate for the microbial production of enzymes & extraction of other high-value added products, such as anti-oxidants. Further, the high protein enriched residue can serve as animal feed.

Research Area:

Fermentation to produce ligninolytic enzymes & simultaneously analyze polyphenolic compounds & carryover out experiments with swine feed.

Requirements:

B.Sc./B.Tech. in microbiology, biochemistry, biological engineering, biochemical engineering, chemical engineering or related discipline. Practical experience in the field of solid state fermentation or liquid fermentation & knowledge of high performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrophotometry is an added asset. Computer knowledge preferably include programming skills is an advantage. Candidates ought to be proficient in English & Spanish.
Application ought to include a CV, list of publications, names & contacts of 2-3 references, list of research interests.

Applications are invited from outstanding, enthusiastic graduates with a background in Ecology, Entomology, Geochemistry, Forestry or a related discipline to undertake research towards a doctoral degree (PhD) at University College Dublin (National University of Ireland, Dublin) on a project titled:
Development of novel ‘green’ pesticides for commercial forestryplantations.

This project will create a novel protection strategy against herbivorous insect pests for woody plants with particular reference to coniferous plantation species. The approach will exploit the anti-feedant properties of selected natural mineral elements. The bioavailability of these elements from different soils and amendments will be assessed using geochemical and isotopic methods. Then, the effects of enhanced mineral levels in tree seedlings on feeding destroy by Pine weevils (Hylobius abietis) and seedling survival will be assessed under controlled conditions and in commercial field plantations in collaboration with the industry partner, Coillte. The project will involve analytical, experimental and field-based research work. The project will also provide training opportunities in innovation and know-how transfer.

The student will be supervised jointly by Dr. Olaf Schmidt (School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine) and Prof. Frank McDermott (School of Geological Sciences). The worth of this bursary is Euro 16,000 (tax exempt) per year for up to 4 years, commencing in September 2010. The Registration Fee for European Union citizens will even be paid.

As part of a bigger project a PhD scholarship in the field Micro Fuel Cells is obtainable in the MEMS-Applied Sensors group headed by Erik V. Thomsen, Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology, DTU Nanotech. The project is focused on developing a miniature direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The purpose of this fuel cell is to power tiny transportable devices. The candidate will work on designing and fabricating the DMFC with special emphasis on the different structures needed – these are made using micro and nano fabrication techniques in the state of the art cleanroom DANCHIP at DTU. The project is in collaboration with several companies and other academic partners.

Qualifications
Candidates ought to have a master’s degree in engineering or physics or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering. It is an advantage to have experience in working with cleanroom technologies (including lithography, etching, narrow film deposition and material analysis), electro chemistry, fuel cells and tool design. You ought to furthermore be highly motivated, team player, ambitious, and have a high scientific standard.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, see the DTU PhD Guide.
