[Europe/UK] University of Westminster Undergraduate Scholarships 2010 for EU/UK and International Students

Posted by: In: Scholarships in Europe|Undergraduate

You can apply for a scholarship at the University of Westminster if you have been offered either a conditional or unconditional place but please note that you must apply for the scholarship before your course starts.

If, however, you are an undergraduate UK/EU student who started your course under the new tuition fee regime then there are a number of progression scholarships that can be awarded to you at the end of your first year at the University.

Scholarships are awarded on one or more of the following criteria:

  • Academic excellence
  • Financial need
  • Development potential (for international students)

All other scholarships are only awarded before you start your course.

As different scholarships use different criteria, please check that you meet the appropriate criteria for the scholarship you are applying for. Scholarships usually pay for all or part of the tuition fee, and some include other costs such as accommodation, flights and living expenses.

The University of Westminster offers the following undergraduate scholarships:

  • Scholarships for UK/EU students
  • Undergraduate UK/EU section
  • Progression Scholarships and Westminster Careers Awards
  • Scholarships for international students

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UK/EU STUDENTS

Gold and Silver Scholarships

The University has a generous scholarship scheme for UK/EU students. Our gold level scholarships are worth £12,000 over three years and our silver scholarships are worth £6,000 over three years.

All scholarships will be paid as tuition fee costs, except in cases where the award exceeds the cost of the fees, where the excess will be paid as a cheque. All cheques will be made available in January 2011.

The scholarship is guaranteed for the first year, but subject to satisfactory academic progress for subsequent years.

The scholarships are for any undergraduate course in the University. These are open to all applicants. For half of the available scholarships, priority will be given to you if you are from our associate and partner colleges and schools.

Typically, a gold level scholarship is set at 3 As at A level, or equivalent qualification, and silver level is set at 3 Bs at A level, or equivalent qualification. Please note this academic criterion is not absolute, and other factors such as financial need, difficulties overcome, being the first in your family to attend university and your supporting statement will be taken into consideration. The average entry qualifications for particular courses will also be a consideration.

Deadline: 02 April 2010.

Please note courses in the School of media, arts and design have a later deadline of 23rd April.

Scholarships for Students with Disabilities

In line with its commitment to providing education for all, the University has a number of scholarships available for you if you have achieved academic excellence in spite of severe disabilities. These will be at gold or silver level, and you must have an offer of a place on a full-time undergraduate course at the University. These scholarships will not take into account any other funding you may have from other sources.

Deadline: 02 April 2010.

PROGRESSION SCHOLARSHIPS AND WESTMINSTER CAREERS AWARDS

Maud Tyler Scholarship

Dr Maud Tyler, who retired as Deputy Vice-Chancellor in December 2006 after 35 years at the University, has made a generous donation. This scholarship will be available to you if you are applying for the progression or career awards scholarships, and have a specific or hidden disability.

Amount:£4,000 per annum, £3,000 available as tuition fee waiver plus £1,000 towards living costs.

Eligibility: You must be a year 1 University of Westminster UK/EU student applying for the progression or career awards scholarships, and have a specific or hidden disability.

Deadline: 31 August 2010.

The University is pleased to be associated with the Helena Kennedy Foundation, and will make a number of awards to those of you coming through this route. The Helena Kennedy Foundation exists to tackle injustice and social exclusion through education, by supporting you if you are disadvantaged and come from further and adult education sectors to complete your studies and move on successfully into employment.

For further information email the Helena Kenedy Foundation at enquiries@hkf.org.uk or see http://www.hkf.org.uk

Care Leavers Scholarship

Care leavers have a less than 1% participating ratio in higher education. The university has developed new scholarships specifically for care leavers to encourage them to take up the opportunity of a University education. Up to 10 scholarships of £4,000 or £2,000, depending on academic achievements will be available for care leavers for London boroughs. Care leavers from outside London will also be considered sympathetically for our Gold and Silver scholarships.

Eligibility: Students must be holding the offer of a place on an undergraduate course at the university and must have recently been in the care of their local authorities. Priority will be given to students from London boroughs but we encourage all care leavers to apply for these scholarships. Scholarships will be of £4,000 or £2,000 per annum subject to previous academic achievements.

Reid Scholarship for Biosciences

Following a generous donation from Guildford Academic Associates a £1000 cash award is available for women who wish to study biosciences. Applicants must be U.K. citizens, the first in their family to attend university and be academically excellent. Applications must reach the scholarships office by 31st August 2010.

Organ Scholarship

The University has two historic cinema organs. We are looking for students who can play the organ to use these on a regular basis to keep them in good order. The successful applicant will be expected to play each instrument at least weekly. A cash award of £2,000 per annum is available to the successful candidate. Students should supply details of their ability and achievements as a musician. Students may apply at anytime for this scholarship but priority will be given to early applicants.

Writing London – Creative Writing Competition

The School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages and the department of English, Linguistics and Cultural Studies at the University of Westminster are pleased to announce the Writing London Competition. This writing context is open to all UK and EU sixth-form secondary school/FE college students. The winner will receive:

  • A conditional offer to study Creative Writing at the University of Westminster subject to the candidate’s meeting entry requirements and qualifications.
  • A scholarship worth £4000 (comprising a first-year fee-waiver scholarship + cash prize).
  • Publication of winning piece in PaleFire.

All entries will be in English and not exceed 1500 words (one entry per person). Entries may include short fiction, poetry, drama and non-fiction. The competition invites students to explore the wide range of material that London offers to the creative writer: all entries should bear links to the city of London. Each year the Writing London competition will invite schools to explore a different theme. The theme for 2009 -10 is: Food.

Please send typed entries (double-spaced, 12 font size) accompanied by a Writing London Competition cover sheet along with your portfolio submission to:

Joe Marshall
Admissions and Marketing
j.marshall@westminster.ac.uk
Ext. 2392
